According to Merriam-Webster, a Doula is: “a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during and just after childbirth.” (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/doula)
Research shows that childbirth does go more smoothly with a doula: labor is 25 percent shorter, the need for epidural pain relief is 60 percent less and the Cesarean section rate is reduced by half.

A doula can prove to be an invaluable resource to your family by acting as a liaison between you the birthing mother and your care provider. She will help to respectfully convey your wishes to your care provider, help you to advocate for your preferences, and help you by imparting valuable education regarding birth options and your rights as a parent. Doulas also offer constant support during labor, prior to the trip to the birth center, and prior to the arrival of the midwife. Doulas work in harmony with your midwife, offer comfort measures, labor coaching, guidance and continuous support to you and your family. While Katy Birth Center does not perform epidurals or Cesarean sections, they do welcome your doula to be a part of the birth team.
